365 Project - Day 29

on the way home from the pottery studio with the girls (more on that to come),
i saw this and had to stop.
the shadows of the tree on the peeling red paint of the door stopped me in my tracks.
the girls were wondering what in the world i was taking a photo of.

365 Project - Day 28

date night!
we saw the artist and liked it, but it really is silent.
there was a man a few rows behind us snoring.

Trip to the Library

I love what happens when we go to the library.

We come home with this:

and the girls do this:

I absolutely love these moments.  There is no screaming or crying or fighting...for at least two minutes.

Throwback Accessory

When we were in Miami before Christmas, we saw a few people using these and we couldn't help but laugh.  The POP Phone by Native Union is about $30 and it is compatible with iPhones and, I believe, Androids (but double check that one first).  Not a bad way to fight off the possible ill effects of cell phone use. And remember twirling that cord around your finger?  Good times.

I like the light blue in the bottom photo - which one is your favorite?

365 Project - Day 24

i don't remember what she was looking at,
but i love this moment.
and the sunlight.

What I'm Reading: The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

I finished Room by Emma Donoghue yesterday, and I loved it.  It was an unusual story line (sadly, we all know about Jaycee Dugard and her kidnapping, but Room was written before Dugard's story broke) written from the perspective of the 5 year old who has never been outside of Room.  His language is confusing and a bit jumbled, but once you get the hang of it, it goes very quickly.

Now I am on to The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach. My brother, father, and husband all read it and loved it (and B does not often finish books!), so it's my turn.  I think it was also one of the NY Times Books of the Year.

365 Project - Day 23

i love this moment before l goes to bed.
she turns on her turtle and gazes at the stars and moon.
i gaze at her, covered with stars and smiling.

Back to the studio

I absolutely adore my pottery class and the fun ladies in it.  We are all ages and from all walks of life -  a massage therapist with a very active love life, a super-creative Portland native who works for Big Brothers Big Sisters, an avid horseback rider, a cardiac nurse, a social worker, and a stay at home mom (yours truly) to name a few.  We have so much fun chatting while we throw pots and curse our feeble attempts while admiring the lovely work of some of our classmates.

I mostly throw uneven mugbowls (not big enough to be a good mug and way too small to be a useful bowl), but I still love it.  And I get messy.  Really messy.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books from back in the day?  I think they were popular in the late '70s or '80s, and my family had a big collection of them.  "If you would like to open the door on the right, turn to page 31.  If you would like to open the door on the left, turn to page 42."  I have decided I would like a Choose Your Own Adventure book for my life.

I know, I know - what's the fun in that.

But really, I would like to know how one choice or another would effect me and my family in the long run.  I would love to know if one choice would cause mental distress for one of my girls requiring years of therapy as they get older.  I would like to be able to see what would happen if we lived here or there, worked in this job or that job, bought this house or that house...You see where I am going with this?

I often say that parenthood should come with a manual.  Not just one manual, either, but a manual for each child.  I have learned firsthand just how different siblings can be, and having a manual for each would be incredibly helpful.

P's manual would have told us about her desire to suck on things from birth, and perhaps it could have explained what would have happened had we let her keep her pacifier versus forcing her to "find" her thumb.  It would have told us that the Richard Ferber sleep book would work like a charm for her and that she really does require at least 10 hours of sleep each night to be pleasant the next day.  (That sounds familiar, but I would really prefer at least 11 hours.)  P's manual would also have told us a bit about her personality - her sensitive nature and incredible empathy, and how best to support her when really all we want to say is "It's no big deal. Don't worry about it."  (B and I both know that brushing off a child's concerns is not the way to go.  Remember that therapy I was talking about before...)  And now that she is getting older, her manual could teach us about how she will test the limits (cutting her hair during quiet time, for example) and how to deal with each new phase.

L's manual would have had a big disclaimer on the first page (maybe even on the cover) telling us to remember that this little girl is a completely different girl than her big sister.  "Yes, they are sisters," it would say, "but what works for one sister doesn't necessarily work for another sister," it could warn.

L's manual would tell us to throw Ferber's book out of the window, along with every other sleep book, because this little munchkin doesn't require as much sleep as her sister and will not do well with the "cry it out" or co-sleeping methods.  Her manual would tell us that she is just a feisty girl who has a very sweet side like P, but also who can throw a tantrum like nobody's business and that she will try to assert herself at every opportunity.  This manual would tell us to be ready for a battle at almost any turn, but also to prepare ourselves to see the sweet love that P and L give each other...when they are not trying to physically harm one another.

So back to the Choose Your Own Adventure book.  There are some questions and possible major life transitions on the horizon for us, and I just want to make sure we are doing what is best for all of us.  Is that possible?  To do what is best for each member of our little family?

B and I clearly want what is best for our girls, but we have to think about our happiness as well because an unhappy mommy or daddy do not a happy family make.  This is where the book would come in.  It could show me exactly what I want to know.  How will this effect P in the long run?  Will L be okay and go with the flow?  Is our current home the place of happy memories for them that will be crushed if we move to a different home or a different city?  Would they adjust, as many children do, or would they have lingering effects that would weigh on them?  Please, where is my book?

I know, there is no Choose Your Own Adventure book for our family or individual manuals for our girls, so we will have to do what feels right in our hearts and in our heads.  We will have to weigh the pros and cons and take our girls' very different personalities into account, and then all we can do is hope for the best.

We will have to choose our own adventure and see what happens.

Kids Book of The Week: The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

I adore this author and will tell you about his other books that I love soon, but for today I had to chose The Curious Garden.  We checked it out from the library last week, and the sweet story and lovely illustrations have captured us all.

Little Liam lives in a bleak city with no greenery... until he happens upon a mini garden up on some old railroad tracks.  Liam nurses the garden back to life and it flourishes and spreads to every part of the city.  Other gardeners come out of their homes to help maintain this beautiful outside world, and Liam continues to work on his railroad garden until he is a man with kids of his own.

The bright, cheerful illustrations grow with each page as the garden itself grows.  The city that started out as dreary and grey becomes a happy and vibrant place for everyone.

If this story sounds a bit familiar, that's because it is.  Check out this info about the High Line in NYC.

Have a house in Maine?

If you do, indeed, have a house in Maine, then I think you should really buy this:

How cute is it?  It is the Paper Boat Lighthouse Schnapps Set from Broadway Panhandler. At only $29.95, it is pretty reasonable and would make a fantastic hostess gift for your weekend in Maine or Cape Cod.  (Could I sound any more pretentious?)  Really, I think it's adorable and fun.  The carafe holds 20.25 ounces and the schnapps glasses hold 1 ounce each.

Does anyone know exactly what a schnapps set is?  Is it schnapps as in peach schnapps?  I doubt it.  But I did drink a lot of that in my younger days and it was tasty...

What I'm Reading: Room by Emma Donoghue

I have been waiting to read this book since I first heard about it months ago.  No, it's not an easy thing, to imagine a five year old being held captive with his mother, knowing nothing but the Room in which he has lived in his entire life.  So far, it is quite well written from the five year old's perspective and a very interesting story.  I will let you know more as I continue with it.

365 Project - Days 14 - 17

Better late than never, right?  I'm finally caught up with my photos for this little 365 project.  Phew!

Splurge on... clog boots?

Yes!  Clog boots, you read that correctly.  I have been lusting after a pair of clog boots that I saw someone wearing almost a year ago in NYC, and I couldn't find them. Until now.  Presenting the 15" Aviator Leather Shearling by No. 6:

I know, you're probably thinking, wow, that's pretty un-exciting.  But look what you can do:

You must understand, I am a big leggings girl in the winter, and I love to wear my leggings with a nice, tall, black boot and some sort of top to cover my tush.  These boots would keep my feet oh-so-toasty and I would feel kind of bad-ass.  I love them. You can order them here, but they are $425 - hence, the splurge.

Kids Book of the Week: Pete The Cat

We heard this story at storytime at the library this week, and we've been listening to it non-stop. The girls love singing along with Pete, and I've got to admit, it's pretty catchy. We couldn't bring the actual book home, and I think it may be a bit young for P, but both she and L are absolutely mesmerized when the author begins speaking.  Very cute.

365 Project - Day 11

Hot Chocolate

If a packet of instant hot cocoa isn't cutting it for you these days, try this:

absolutely delicious and all natural

Stay warm and toasty!

One month until...Birthday Time!

In early February, little L will turn 3.  3 years old.  Holy moly!  How did that happen?

Anyway, we were tempted to plan a celebration consisting of a dinner with friends, but that's not really us, is it?  No.

So here is what I am thinking.  A little cereal bar/cartoons/stories/all-while-wearing-pjs party!  Sounds like fun.  Let the planning begin.

doesn't even require baking
thanks Martha.

who doesn't love cap'n crunch with crunch berries?

spoons as party favors!
too cute.
more Mer Mag love.

P.S. This morning, P told me that I have to buy some new pajamas for the party.  I guess she doesn't think my XL pregnancy leggings and droopy t-shirt will cut it.  I agree.

365 Project - Day 10

we went to the playground.

I saw this on Apartment Therapy last night, and I just love it:

It's amazing what a little paint can do.  I have major zig zag love flowing through me these days.  I'll show you more soon.

365 Project - Day 9

i made a friend at the gym today.
he made a balloon dog and flower for my girls.
and then i finished with my crunches and push-ups.

The Secret Garden and Incredibly Gorgeous Books!

I am reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett to P, and I just had to show you the incredible clothbound edition that I found:

P is only 5, so I'm not sure the book is age-appropriate, but I couldn't help but buy it when I laid eyes on it.  This is the kind of thing I imagine us keeping and perhaps one day passing down to our children to read with their children.  If they have children which I hope they do...if they want to.  Their happiness if most important, of course.  Getting ahead of myself here.  You know what I mean.

Look at some of the other beautiful books available:

Some of them are available here, and of course you can try your local independent bookstore.  I found mine at BBGB.  Love that place. I may have to get some for me, too.  Check 'em out.

On Thankfulness and Gratitude

So you know how I have been trying to cultivate an attitude of gratefulness and gratitude?  Well, while reading Psychology Today over the weekend, I came across an interesting article about a ballerina turned ad exec who has a blog devoted to thankfulness.  Every day she writes a thank you note, and most are not directed towards a person.  Some of my favorites:

So true, so true.
Hope you had a great weekend.

365 Project - Day 8

we lounged all day yesterday.
the girls played with their Barbies.
they love this little perch behind the sofa.
